What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a waking state of focused attention. It's similar to what you experience while absorbed in reading, watching a good movie, or daydreaming. In my practice, the hypnotic state is purposefully brought about to focus on building new behaviors and attaining personal goals. Being hypnotized is an enjoyable and pleasant experience.
How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis works by producing a state of mind where you become more aware of your feelings, motivations, and reasons for your behavior. Hypnosis enables you to discover solutions for improvement, and to eliminate unwanted behavior. All hypnosis is a form of self-hypnosis. This basically means you're hypnotizing yourself using my voice to guide you. Think about that. If you grasp this concept your mind will know just what to do, automatically. If you want to be hypnotized, tell yourself how easy it is to follow every suggestion. That's all you have to do.
Is hypnosis a sleep state?
No, hypnosis is not a sleep state. Hypnosis is a waking state of relaxed attention. In hypnosis you're conscious, alert, and aware of your environment. You can hear normal sounds around you while you listen to the words that I say.
What is the difference between hypnotherapy and psychotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is not psychotherapy. Psychotherapy (which I do not provide) is the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders. Hypnotherapy (which I do provide) is the use of guided relaxation and suggestion to improve general self-control and maintain a positive mental attitude. I help ordinary people with everyday problems. I do not diagnose, treat, nor prescribe for clients regarding issues related to medical or mental health conditions.
Who can be hypnotized?
Normal, intelligent people with the right attitude and motivation have the capacity to experience hypnosis through the guidance of a hypnotist. Even strong-willed individuals--or those who like to feel in control--can experience hypnosis confidently.
Can I be made to do something against my will?
No. I cannot make you do something you don't want to do. Although I guide you into the hypnotic state, the ability to accept hypnosis and the suggestions presented rests within you. You're always in control.
What will I experience during my first session?
To begin, we'll discuss the goal you want to achieve or the problem you want to resolve. We'll talk about what you've tried in the past, what has worked, and what has not. I'll review what hypnosis is, how it works, and the ways you may experience hypnosis. We'll set realistic expectations from the work we'll do together. Perhaps you'll even begin feeling better before the hypnosis begins.
I'll then guide you into hypnosis using methods I've chosen for your individual personality and the nature of your goal or issue. At the end of your session you'll emerge from hypnosis feeling relaxed and refreshed.
How will I know I'm hypnotized?
You'll learn what hypnosis feels like to you. Everyone experiences hypnosis uniquely. Some people feel a relaxed heaviness or a pleasant calm, others may feel like they're floating. It may be a subtle experience, as it was for me when I was first hypnotized. While hypnotized your mind will wander at times. You may even think, "Is this working? Am I in hypnosis?" Rest assured, this is perfectly normal in hypnosis.
HOW TO SUCCEED
It's great when someone is a natural, the ideal hypnosis client, but more often it takes a measure of preparation to ready yourself for the experience. Here's how you can succeed with hypnosis.
Resistance will hamper progress. Do you want to be hypnotized? If the answer is yes, then do yourself a favor, make a decision from the outset to follow my guidance through the process. That's all it takes. If you follow my instructions the first time, you'll notice how easy it becomes to be hypnotized the second and third time. If you want to be hypnotized, just do what I say. I can help you experience hypnosis more fully. I'm very successful at it. However, I can't force you to accept a suggestion. Only you can decide you will follow suggestions. Only you can decide you want a suggestion to work. When you decide to follow a suggestion, you're allowing the hypnosis to work effectively.
Are you ready to work towards your goal? What's your motivation? Having a genuine desire to attain your goal is crucial to success. If someone is urging you to change, and you're not ready to change, wait until you are ready before coming in to see me.
THINK ABOUT IT
Have you taken time to think this through? How do you think hypnosis is going to help you accomplish your goal as compared to doing it on your own, without my help? Are your expectations reasonable? What are you prepared to do to see your goal realized? Practicing self-hypnosis should be part of the process. It requires as little as 3 minutes a day.
IMAGINE YOURSELF BETTER
Can you imagine how life will be better after reaching your goal? How does that look and feel to you? If you can imagine what is possible then change will happen more quickly. Look forward to being creative. Hypnosis is great for tapping into the creative part of your mind.
